About Miriam
For over 30 years I have provided speech and language evaluations and therapy for children in New York City. I began my career working at a school for children with language-based learning disabilities where I met with children individually, in small groups, and in the classroom in conjunction with special education teachers. Subsequently, I worked at a therapeutic nursery as a member of an interdisciplinary team comprised of parents, special education teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, occupational therapists, and music therapists. This experience instilled in me the importance of treating the ‘whole’ child. Currently, I concentrate on my private practice, which I began over twenty years ago, and I consult at an independent preschool. As a consultant I make recommendations for further evaluation, and I work closely with teachers to help facilitate language development and social interactions in the classroom.
From an undergraduate degree in music, I found my way to an interest in speech and language development in children and, specifically, to children for whom speech and language don’t develop smoothly. Developing a therapeutic relationship, nurturing a child’s strengths while working on difficulties, and making the work engaging, are key components of my approach to therapy.

Speech and Language Evaluations for Children aged 2-12
Speech evaluation
A speech evaluation includes standardized articulation testing as well as analysis of conversational speech.
Language evaluation
A comprehensive expressive and receptive language evaluation includes an initial meeting with parents, a school observation and/or conversations with teachers, standardized testing, and clinical observations that include a language sample analysis. Preschool evaluations also include assessment of play development as well as early-developing phonological awareness skills necessary for literacy.

Speech and Language Therapy
for children experiencing speech and/or language delays or disorders
Articulation therapy
Articulation therapy helps children develop standard speech sound production that is commensurate with their age, whether they are having difficulty with a single sound or their speech is unintelligible, so they feel confident communicating.

Language therapy
Language therapy addresses both spoken and written language. Depending on a child’s needs, this includes the receptive and expressive development of narratives, grammar, vocabulary, pragmatics, reading comprehension, and written language formulation and organization.

Ongoing communication with parents and teachers is always a part of the therapy process.
